Carborynes are no carborynes (as in benzyne) but rather carborenes (as in alkenes) – show Jiří Kaleta, Josef Michl, and colleagues from IOCB Prague in their latest paper in ACS Inorganic Chemistry.
The researchers studied carborane clusters and their reactions analogous to the chemistry of hydrocarbons and described the formation of an extremely reactive double bond in a negatively charged carborene cluster. They also described the migration of double bond associated with ethylene formation during the demethylation of carborene clusters.
