On 20 May 2024, the Learned Society of the Czech Republic elected at its XXX General Assembly Dr. Ivo Starý as the 1st Vice-president and future president of the Society. Dr. Starý holds the position of Distinguished Chair and is the head of the Chemistry of Functional Molecules group at IOCB Prague.

In his research, he focuses on non-trivial π-electron architectures, particularly the synthesis of helically chiral aromatics (helicenes) that are enantiopure and functionalized. His work explores their (chir)optical properties, self-assembly, charge/spin transport, and nanoscale reactivity. He also develops synthetic methodologies and enantioselective catalysis, aiming to create smart molecular devices.

The Learned Society was founded in 1994 as a successor to the long-standing traditions of the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences, which were interrupted by the Communist dictatorship. The Society brings together significant scientists (a maximum of 111 full members, along with emeriti and foreign members) with the primary mission of supporting the free conduct of research and the advancement of scientific knowledge.

The Society is governed by a Council consisting of the acting, future, and former president, along with the scientific secretary and the heads of the four sections of the Society, including Prof. Michal Hocek of IOCB Prague, who is the head of the chemistry sciences section.
