Science community initiatives

Women in Science (WiS@IOCB)

The Women in Science at IOCB initiative started in 2017 to support female scientists and address the specific challenges they encounter in their careers. The group organizes career workshops and seminars with inspiring speakers, as well as informal networking sessions, creating a space for open discussion about work-life balance, career development, and other relevant topics. With the support of IOCB management, the initiative has become an important part of the institute’s efforts to create a welcoming and supportive workplace.

One of its main projects is the Dana Hocková Lecture Series, named in memory of Dr. Dana Hocková, a renowned scientist and respected mentor. These events combine scientific presentations with personal stories of navigating a career in research, offering practical advice and encouragement. In the series, successful female researchers from academia and industry share their experiences in overcoming obstacles, finding a balance between work and personal life, and mentoring new generations of scientists.

The initiative also focuses on broader issues that affect the entire IOCB community, including career barriers, mentorship opportunities, and access to support services. Through these activities, Women in Science helps to foster a collaborative environment where researchers can share experiences and learn from one another.

PostDoc Club

The IOCB PostDoc Club is an initiative driven by postdoctoral researchers to foster collaboration, knowledge exchange, and professional development. Its primary goal is to create a supportive community through monthly meetings where postdocs can come together to discuss topics of shared interest and relevance. These meetings provide opportunities for peer-to-peer learning, with participants sharing expertise in areas such as developing technical skills, exploring fellowship opportunities, crafting research proposals, and navigating international experiences.

The club also hosts talks by esteemed professionals from academia and industry, who share their career journeys and offer practical advice.

Green Club

The IOCB Green Club is dedicated to promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable practices within the IOCB community. Established in autumn 2023 with the support of IOCB management, the club brings together employees and students to work on practical ways to reduce the institution’s environmental impact.

The group focuses on raising awareness, promoting eco-friendly habits, and implementing sustainable projects. From advocating energy-saving measures to reducing waste and improving recycling, the Green Club strives to make sustainable practices a natural part of everyday life at IOCB.
