Jiří Polman is an organic chemist with experience in both academia and business. He studied at the Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague, and earned his Ph.D. in 1990 at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry. That same year, he began his management career at the US company DuPont, later serving as Sales Director at Tatra, working as a consultant, and, starting in 2011, as CEO of Sandvik Chomutov Precision Tubes, a manufacturer of precision tubes for offshore oil extraction and the nuclear industry. From 2018, he served as chairman of Český strojírenský holding a.s. In 2021, he co-founded H2O nanotec, a company focused on applying nanotechnology in water purification. In 2022, he returned to IOCB Prague and has held the role of Vice-director for Strategy since November 2024.
